I Tried to Outsmart AI Tracking. It Was a Nightmare.

Look, I get it. We’re all kinda freaked out about AI knowing our life story. But honestly, I thought I was being clever. Last Tuesday, over coffee at the place on 5th, my friend Marcus—let’s call him Marcus, ’cause his real name’s boring—he told me, “You’re paranoid, Dave. It’s not that bad.” Which… yeah. Fair enough. But then I spent 36 hours trying to outsmart these algorithms, and let me tell you, it’s completley exhausting.

First, I tried the obvious stuff. Deleting cookies? Done. Using a VPN? Check. But then I realized, AI doesn’t care about your cookies. It’s all about your behavior. And frankly, I’m not sure than I can outsmart that.

Here’s What Actually Works (Sort Of)

So, I talked to this guy—let’s call him Dave, ’cause his name’s actually Marcus—who’s kinda a big deal in cybersecurity. He said, “Dave, you’re overcomplicating this. Use a temporary number for instagram signup. Simple.” And I was like, “Dave, that’s genius.” But then I had to figure out how to do it without getting locked out of my own accounts. It’s a committment, let me tell you.

Then there’s the whole “don’t be creepy” thing. I mean, I get it. AI learns from us. But when my smart speaker starts recommending products I looked at three seconds ago, it’s kinda creepy. I asked Dave about this, and he just laughed. “Dave,” I said, “it’s not funny. It’s like living in a Black Mirror episode.” He said, “Yeah, but what are you gonna do?”

A Tangent: My Cat and the Smart Fridge

Speaking of creepy, remember that time my cat, Miso, started meowing at the smart fridge? I swear, it was like she knew it had food in it. I’m not saying the fridge was spying on her, but… I mean, look at her. She’s a genius. And if she can figure it out, so can the AI.

Anyway, back to the point. I tried to limit my digital footprint. Deleted old accounts, stopped using social media for a week—honestly, it was the best week of my life. But then I realized, AI doesn’t need your active participation to know you. It’s always watching. Always learning. And frankly, it’s determing.

The Big Reveal: I Failed

So, after all that, did I succesfully outsmart AI? Nope. Did I learn anything? Maybe. I mean, I learned that I’m not as clever as I thought. And that’s okay. Because at the end of the day, AI’s not going anywhere. And neither are we. So we might as well learn to live with it.

But hey, at least I tried. And that’s more than I can say for most people. So there’s that.

Dave Marcus is a senior magazine editor with 20+ years of experience. He’s been writing about tech since the days of dial-up, and he’s still not sure how any of this works. When he’s not wrestling with AI, he’s probably arguing with his cat about fridge rights.
